Vanderwaal chose to try her luck on America's Got Talent, a prominent NBC competition show that she had grown up watching, when she was twelve years old. Despite being one of the tryouts' youngest performers, her performance of her own song, I Don't Know My Name, soon drew the judges' attention. Not only did it receive a fantastic evaluation from Simon Cowell, one of the show's creators, but it also prompted Judge Howie Mandel to press the Golden Buzzer, effectively bypassing the Judge's Cuts and sending the young singer straight to the Live Shows.
America's Got Talent, created by Cecile Frot-Coutaz, Ken Warwick, and Simon Cowell, is one of the most well-known reality talent series to ever air on American television. Every season of Got Talent features a number of performers (e.g., dancers, singers, comedians, magicians, etc.) who compete against one another for a chance to win a cash reward of $1,000,000. The show, which premiered on the NBC Network in the summer of 2006, has won numerous industry awards during its existence, including a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2011.
VanderWaal competed in the eleventh season against a number of other contestants, including comic jugglers The Passing Zone, magician Jon Dorenbos, variety illusionist Hara, and contortionist Sofie Dossi, among others. Heidi Klum, Mel B, Howie Mandel, and Simon Cowell were the judges for season eleven, which premiered on May 31, 2016, replacing Howard Stern. It also featured the Golden Buzzer, which, like the previous two seasons, is a buzzer that, when pressed, sends the performing act straight to the live show; each judge can only use it once every season.

Vanderwaal, who was one of only ten contenders left in the Finals, chose Clay as her Finals song, another original work she wrote herself. After winning the competition, the young celebrity said that she will spend some of her prize money on a tree house and a charitable gesture. She appeared on a variety of television talk shows, including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Ellen Degeneres Show. She headlined a number of sold-out shows in Los Angeles shortly after, and then appeared on NBC's America's Got Talent Holiday Spectacular event in November 2016.
She eventually signed with Columbia Records later that fall and began production on her debut EP the following October. The album, named Perfectly Imperfect, was released on December 2, 2016. Greg Wells oversaw the production and mixing of the recordings, which were recorded in New York. It also charted at number eleven on the Canadian Albums Chart and number two on the New Zealand Heatseekers Album Chart outside of the United States. It yielded the single, I Don't Know My Name, which was met with critical acclaim, with many praising the EP's powerful ballads.
Billboard Magazine named her one of music's hottest newcomers under the age of twenty-one, and she performed a number of performances in support of her EP, including at a New York Knicks game in Madison Square Garden and during Macy's 2016 Thanksgiving Parade, where she performed two of her own songs.

Despite being busy working on a new album (she has stated that it will be less acoustic than her EP), she has found time to perform at a number of events this year, including a Valentine's Day performance at the top of the Empire State Building. VanderWaal also performed at two charity events in March, the first of which encouraged young people's devotion to social causes and the second of which was for a Cirque du Soleil benefit gala hosted at a Las Vegas hotel.
She was also one of the finalists for the 2017 International Acoustic Music Awards in the category of "Best Female Artist," demonstrating her talent beyond her years. She was also nominated for a Radio Disney Music Award shortly after.
